North Yorkshire County Council Children and Families: Prevention Service

The Prevention Service Staff have a wide range of skills and expertise, who are based in local hubs to ensure that children, young people and families have speedier and easier access to the best possible support and help, when they need it.

The YJS works in partnership with The Prevention Service and has several seconded staff members working in local hubs.

YJS Staff are working with young people who have received Youth Cautions, those who are on the edge of crime and young people who are at risk of getting into trouble.

Targeting young people at an early stage can help prevent escalation into the Youth Justice System, and also help stop future offending, which protects the public from harm.

Multisystemic Therapy (MST)

MST is an intensive service that meets with families in their own homes to help deal with the causes of a young person’s difficult or challenging behaviour. MST works with families of young people aged 11-17 years who are living at home and need support to:

  • Attend school and be successful in school

  • Improve family life and make home a safe place

  • Stop offending and anti-social behaviour

  • Reduce/Stop drug and alcohol use

  • Keep young people living at home

MST works with all of the systems in a young person’s life, such as school, friends, family and community in order to understand these difficulties.

What happens with MST?

MST intervention will last around 3-5 months depending on what help is needed and the interventions are typically aimed at providing parents/carers with the skills and resources they need to address the young person’s behavioural difficulties. An MST therapist will visit families at home, usually three times a week to help reach goals that have been set.

MST is available in the Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale areas with future potential for the project to be rolled out across North Yorkshire. To find out more about MST and the referral process, contact MST Programme Manager – Jade Gooch Jade.Gooch@northyorks.gov.uk
